GAR FLY FISHING WEEKEND | Lake Pepin Area | Aug 10-11, 2019

Gar Fishing in Pepin WI, near the confluence of the Chippewa and Mississippi Rivers.

Ever try fishing for Gar? How about with a fly rod?

One of our members has offered the use of his farm for camping and as a base location.

This is a “on your own” outing next week. Watercraft will be needed. Boats are not provided, so hook up with someone who has one, or offer up yours! Tents are not provided, and as of now, there is not a club picnic lunch planned for either day,

For those of you without a boat, there a a few good quality trout streams nearby.

Stop by the club meeting at Gulden’s on Thursday Aug., 8th for more details. Should be a good time to be had by all.

Calling All Interested Parties! Volunteers Needed!

The Brule River Sportsmans Club will be conducting a habitat project renovation over the next two Saturdays (July 20 and 27).

The club has supported this project in the name of our passed member and club board member, Ed Saindon.

I intend to go up and help out, and any able bodies are welcome and encouraged to come participate in collaboration with the Brule River Sportsmans Club. Please let me know if you would like to attend.

 The project will consist of either the replacement of spawning gravel or the relocation of spawning gravel depending on the approval of a permit to do the work. 

The project site is located near Stones Bridge on the Upper Brule River.

THORAX: One light or dark dun CDC feather pulled over top of SLF golden olive dubbing. Dubbing should be picked out.
LEGS: Partridge feather cut to V, tied in facing down.

NOTE: Change colors for BWO, PMD, Hendrickson mayfies. Light dun CDC takes marker well, so try a light pink for Hendrickson, apple for BWO, and yellow ochre for PMD.

May 30th Meeting Moved to Keller Lake at 6:00

Please note: Due to schedule conflicts, there will be no meeting or tying on May 30th at Gulden’s.

Instead, the Club has decided to have its meeting at the Keller Lake Park Island. This isn’t an official outing, but show up and practice your casting skills, or fish for small panfish and bass, or just hangout. Rumor has it that there are a few musky in the lake too.

Details need to be worked out, but we won’t be paying to reserve a spot, so the exact location may need to move a bit. This is definitely a BYOB affair. Boats not furnished, but the shoreline is good.

Park ‘n’ Play day at the Oakdale Discovery Center is right around the corner. Come explore nature through a variety of classes and activities including arts, recreation, and education. Enjoy just one class or sign-up for multiple!

On Friday May 17th the St. Paul Fly Tiers are helping out with Independent School District 622’s Community Education program and will be teaching fly tying and fly casting. The cost of the tying class is $25 which includes all materials and tools and the cost for the fly casting lesson is $20.  If you are interested you must sign up through the ISD622 community education program.  Link to classes are here:

MillStream Day in Marine on St. Croix! Sunday May 19th, Noon to 4pm — Burris Park
 
Near the Village Center in Marine on St. Croix. Come celebrate spring as it blooms in the St. Croix Valley.

Fresh brook trout, layered with dill, lemon and butter, cooked to perfection, is offered for lunch, along with brats and side dishes. Food offered until it is sold out, so come early!  

This ever-popular trout lunch brings back aficionados year after year! Ribbon weaving of the Maypole is scheduled for 2:00 PM, and the exciting Morris Dancers are fun to watch all day. Music by Brian Wicklund and friends. Also featured are exhibits on etymology, fly tying, history, and many topics of interest.

It is planned for St. Paul Fly Tiers to help out with the fly tying at this event. See Tony Stifter for more details.
